About us

We are FTC team 6567 the RoboRaiders

The Red Hook RoboRaiders are a public high school robotics team from the Hudson Valley in Upstate New York. We have participated in FTC competitions for seven seasons. We have a student-driven team of 8 juniors and seniors and a junior team, Red Storm, for younger students. Our students are diverse with a wide range of interests, and abilities. Our diversity has helped us learn from each other and work together better as a team. We are known for our hand knit hats that we wear to every competition and our mascot in a suit of armor.

What is FIRST?

FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". FIRST is a non-profit organization that was founded by Dean Kamen (also the inventor of the segway) in 1989.  FIRST's slogan is "To create a world where science and technology are celebrated... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes". Currently FIRST has over 400,000 students, 90,000 mentors, and 38,700 teams. A major belief in the FIRST community is the term "Gracious Professionalism".  "Gracious Professionalism" has many different meanings and can vary for each team, however it's basic premise is to treat one another with respect and kindness while learning and competing with and against other teams.

What is FTC?

FTC stands for "FIRST Tech Challenge". FTC, previously known as FIRST Vex Challenge (FVC), was announced in 2005. FTC's goal is to create a more intermediate and affordable level of robotics competitions than FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FTC is designed for students in grades 7-12 where they compete in a robot competition against other teams. FTC is considered an academic sport. The season begins in early September when the game is announced. A new game is designed and announced every season by FIRST. Teams then design, build and program their robot to compete in competitions which can start as early as November and finish in late April/ early May with the World Championships.
